It was everything you could ask for in a deciding game. Vancouver held their ace back for it. The Marauders moved their ace up to match.
deGrom versus Wheeler in Game Seven.
They did not disappoint.
In the end, the Nanooks and their righthander edged out a 2-0 victory at Canadian Pacific Yards, completing their third consecutive title.
The pitchers did their part, though deGrom had the slightly better -- but shorter -- outing. Vancouver's pitcher yielded just a pair of hits while pitching into the sixth inning. Unlike Pennsylvania's Wheeler, he did not give up a run.
Wheeler gave up a run in the second on a home run by...
...
...wait for it...
...
...
...
...Garrett Cooper.
What a signing Cooper has turned out to be. Signed in July, Cooper turned the fortunes of a middling team, who simply did not look like viable candidates to defend their title.
After July 3, Vancouver went 64-21. Ten games better than anyone else, and raced up the standings.
On Wednesday night, Cooper cemented his legacy. Cooper's blast gave the Nanooks an early lead, and held up as the winner.
He would also score the insurance run in the fifth.
For Wheeler, it was an unjust result. Pitching seven a two-thirds innings, the Marauder pitcher gave up just four hits -- allowing his side to outhit the Champs by a 6-4 margin.
By winning the series four games to three, Vancouver has also taken their place among the great dynasties of the California League's 38 seasons.
And of course, because it is Vancouver. Riot coverage starts... now.
(Thank you everyone for another great season. Hope to have everyone back for what I believe will be season 39. Let's take a few weeks off, and we can open Free Agency around December 1 -- or whenever Tom decides.)
